The De Havilland -6

14 03 2009

If you stop by the shop in the next few weeks, you’ll get to see what plane interiors are made of…A De Havilland-6 to be exact. Some of you may know this versatile plane as a Twin Otter. The dual prop, high wing seats about 20-26 and is used for short commutes and is a favorite among skydivers. Take out the seats and you’ve room for the whole team.

The plane we’re working on needs a complete interior from bulkheads, to seats, to carpeting.  And like all projects, this one has some special considerations that we’re happy to accommodate. The -6 is based in Alaska, so the materials need to meet FAA regs AND survive 40 below temperatures. The VIPs catching a ride need seats that stay soft and comfortable. The seats can’t dryout and crack due to the frigid temps. So, for the pilot and co-pilot, we’re using leather and sheepskin. For the passengers, high-quality, FAA-approved fabric.

The other consideration is time. While the mechanics are doing a complete overhaul on the airframe, we’re  doing the interior work. All the work needs to be done at the same time, so we need to stay on track.
